Have you ever gotten reprimanded or scolded for explaining educational rights to parents? I have!

It's #tiptuesday, and I have an unpopular opinion today, but hear me out, please.

1) Yes, parents' rights are in the booklet we give parents regarding their procedural safeguards, but honestly, what parents ACTUALLY read those? I had a child with an IEP and even I didn't read them!

2) Parents (for the most part) trust the IEP team, and notifying them of their educational rights is our duty.

3) You legally CANNOT get in trouble with your employer for explaining rights to a parent. People might be annoyed with you (because they don't want to have to work hard and when parents are fully informed they sometimes ask for stuff) but aren't you often annoyed, too? They'll survive it. 😆

🔸 The most important reason that we need to fully inform parents is that they will immediately trust you and appreciate your honesty and support.

That short, honest discussion will go far in building a bond with the parents, and THAT. WILL SERVE YOU WELL through their child's identification, treatment, and even their dismissal!

That’s why I created this craft and these inclusive cards.

Many of the cards have a blank to write in anyone’s name who FEELS LIKE A MOM! Aunts, grandmas, foster parents, stepmoms, any significant grown up in a child’s life, or even a dad!

This was a labor of love. I did my very best to make sure all kinds of families are represented because representation matters! ✨

It's FRIDAY so we should all be on cloud nine, 🌥 but I feel like our jobs bring lots of emotions bubbling up to the surface each week.

It's hard for me to shut off my brain at the end of a work week, sometimes. HOW ABOUT YOU?

Did any of these selective mutism tidbits and facts surprise you?

As an SLP in schools, I worked with several children with selective mutism. It’s a complex and multidimensional disorder and a heart breaking condition to witness.

Sadly, other disciplines in my district too often kept “hands off” of these students because they thought it was a communication disorder (or I believe they just didn’t know how to address it or didn’t care to).

DSM-5 clearly states it is an anxiety disorder.

Helping students overcome SM involves countless hours of trust building. It’s not easy, but it can be done. Some of my former students are proof! One of the best days in my career was when a student of mine sang in front of the entire middle school student body. She is an overcomer, and I will never forget her or her painful journey with mutism.

That being said, treating SM HAS TO BE A TEAM APPROACH. Do we actually have a role to play? YES! WHY? Because we will have to assess to rule out communication needs. You MUST build a relationship with children who have SM so that you can reliably assess them.

Did you know there are 3 types of mutism?

🗣️ ELECTIVE Mutism is when a person chooses not to speak due to psychological issues.
🗣️SELECTIVE Mutism is when a person wants to speak, but under certain circumstances find they can’t bring themselves to.
🗣️TOTAL Mutism is when a person doesn’t speak under any circumstances.

If you are supporting a child with selective mutism and are struggling (it’s usually inevitable), I have resource I developed to get insight into why my students with SM weren’t speaking. No talking needed, but it brings about great insight!
