Today my “baby,” Riley, turned 23! How did this even happen?! His famous words are, “Mom, do you need any help? Do you need anything?” He prefers to fly under the radar- never needing credit or accolades. My dad always said he has a purpose driven life, and I believe that to be true. Riley didn’t want to celebrate today - because he is nothing if not responsible - because he’s fully engulfed in grad school at the moment, but we will soon! I know in his future as an SLP, he will be a blessing to many children because of his empathy and patience (and hopefully to his future wife because we raised him keeping in mind that one day he would be someone’s father and husband). He is pure joy, and his laugh is hands down one of my favorite sounds. Much love to you on your birthday, Riley Tate. ❤️❤️❤️ @hashtag.riley

Let me keep it real by saying, “YES, doing this

Let me keep it real by saying, “YES, doing this is a pain in the butt & no school SLP has time for this,” but is still important & it’s usually time well spent. Also, I think everyone is overthinking it; it doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s truly as easy as #1 above in the graphic so school SLPs, hear me out.

HERE’s the WHY:
1. It can save you time in the long run. I’ve taken baseline data on skills only to discover that I didn’t REALLY need to be working on them. In my admin position, I had staff take baseline data on goals they’d written & they learned the same. Sometimes they even found the child had already met OR surpassed the goal they were going to write! That would’ve been a waste of their time AND the child’s time.
2. How can we actually write a goal with a criteria for mastery (90% accuracy, 4 out of 5 opportunities, 5 times per session) without knowing where we are starting from? Knowing where we are starting helps us make the best projection of a reasonable target!
3. As you know, in a recent post, I talked about the importance of explaining your rationale for goals to parents at IEPs. Having baseline data helps you confidently talk about where the child is NOW & where you are aiming for them to be in one year’s time (after you’ve worked your magic). Likewise, it helps you explain your rational for the mastery criteria part of the goal.
4. Do you know that service providers like SLPs & Sped teachers really DO become defendants in court cases? As a former sped admin, I can tell you it happens more than you may think. Directors & supervisors aren’t usually called to the stand, but service providers on the IEP are. In the groundbreaking ENDREW case that has changed special education, providers were asked to explain why they chose various aspects of their goals and programming.
5. Data is never a bad thing (I can’t believe I’m typing this because I have often considering it a 4 letter word). I do dislike that some administrators rely on data alone without laying eyes on the child behind the data. In most cases, though, data helps you make objective decisions about your students.

I personally love these for articulation, but here’s a TIP for language: If your clients or students don’t have mouse control, they’ll have to use very specific and organized language to tell you which item to drag (in hopes of uncovering a hidden item)! That’s been a huge, unexpected bonus. ⭐️ Uncover the most hidden items to win!

Tired of the die or dice 🎲 falling off your therapy table? Plop it in a small transparent container, and just shake the container. Problem solved! ✨

While we’re on the subject or die rolling...Only want one person to touch the die these days? YOU can be the designated roller or assign that (much desired) job to one child, and alternate it each session! Luckily, dice are easy to clean!

Want to try a cool die trick? Need a digital die? Well, in google chrome, just google “roll a die” and one will instantly roll for you! Then you can pick your die according to how many numbers you want to have on it. I am partial to google’s green triangular die. 😉

The world feels heavy right now, and it when it do

The world feels heavy right now, and it when it does, I turn to ROM-COM fiction! Anything else that’s heavy is too much for my brain to handle. My friend and fellow SLP @rainbowspeechie turned me on to the Winston (bearded) Brothers books (a series) by @reidromance and they are irresistible, cannot.put.down, laugh out loud books! Plus, they feature racially diverse AND neurodiverse characters- not to mention...so many badass women characters (young and not so young).

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars! Go get the first one and prepare to be hooked (read them in order), and follow the author, Penny Reid - her social media accounts crack me up and she gives away tons of stuff! Plus, she often lists her books (audio or digital) for free for a limited time here or there.
