Have you conducted speech and language evals that should’ve included a full team but ended up just being you …because the rest of the pupil appraisal team insisted “it’s the student’s speech causing their behaviors?”

It was my BIGGEST pet peeve while working in schools and the source of enormous frustration.

Here’s an 💡 idea… have the entire team evaluate, and let the data speak for itself!

Can communication disorders contribute to frustration and behaviors?

Sometimes, YES, but in my 27+ years as an SLP, it’s usually something else, and that “something else”
is often one of the conditions on the 3rd slide.

When we ONLY ASSESS COMMUNICATION, children go years (usually until the next triennial) to be properly identified, and frankly, no child can afford to waste that much time being treated for speech and language when serious underlying behavioral problems are affecting their education. 😓

Just say NO and fight like CRAZY the next time an RTI or evaluation team wants to pin all of a child’s behaviors on communication.

EARLY and accurate identification is crucial to a child’s future and academic success!

SAVE this post for the next time you’re put in this position, and mention all the other possibilities listed on slide 3 and, hopefully, watch the team open their minds to other causes.

How many times have you been put in this situation only to have your student get re-identified (correctly) years later?

*SIDE NOTE: not all of the conditions listed result in behaviors, but they sometimes do. I have personal experience with this having raised a neurodiverse child.

You know your students best. You’re the only pro

You know your students best. You’re the only professional who should be making these decisions (based on your knowledge of each child you serve).

Can your sped director dictate minutes? NOPE. ❌

Your immediate supervisor? OH, NO. ❌

When students move up to middle or high school, should you change minutes based on what the new therapist wants? 🙅‍♀️ NO, because they don’t know the student or the student’s needs.

Can others on the IEP team chime in? YES, but remember that YOU are the communication the expert!
Psychologists and other diagnosticians don’t get to override your recommendations without very good cause.

Service delivery is an IEP team decision so only team members have a say. The end. Full stop. 🛑

To make sure your recommendations are heard and respected by the team, it’s always best to be able to speak about the rationale behind your recommendations.✔️

Have you seen these functional beauties from Liliana @bilingualspeechie ?

I worked with bilingual students for much of my career, and there was nothing like this available! Where have these articulation cards been all my #slplife ??

While I’m not totally fluent in French, it’s a language I revert to time and time again because it’s what I grew up hearing and my family spoke. It feels like home. ❤️

Here are just a few reasons I love these bilingual flash cards:

1️⃣ I feel like using these will help to honor and respect the students and families we work with. Besides that, I think monolingual students will enjoy learning words in a new language!
2️⃣ These cards are so sturdy and durable! Not to mention the art is 🔥🔥 gorgeeeeeous! 🔥🔥.
3️⃣ They come on a ring, and if you’ve been here a while, you know I love a good ring so I can hang my cards up for GRAB AND GO 💃🏻 use!
4️⃣ The images are diverse, and every student will see themselves in this deck!

Here’s a fun way to work on prepositions (or you

Here’s a fun way to work on prepositions (or you might call them spatial or positional concepts)!

FIRST, start with a transparent or translucent container. I used this little box, but a cup you can see through works great, too!

ADD any manipulatives you’d like (that will fit under your container). I found these cute little bunnies 🐰🐰🐰 at @barnesandnoble a while back so I used those. Also, I really like that since they’re all different colors, I can add a color modifier when we practice following directions.

In the past I’ve also used @fisherprice little people, Pokémon figurines, Power Rangers, Disney figures, or any characters I had lying around. Don’t overthink it!

FINALLY, practice prepositions by telling your students where to put each bunny, such as:
“Put the purple bunny NEXT TO the pink box.” “Place the orange bunny INSIDE (or UNDER/BELOW) the box.”

Try teaching and practicing some or ALL of these positions:
UNDER, BEHIND, NEAR, IN FRONT OF, ABOVE, BEFORE, BELOW, OUT OF, OUTSIDE, ON, ON TOP OF, OFF, OFF OF, OVER, UNDER, NEXT TO, INSIDE/INSIDE OF, BETWEEN, BY, BESIDE, BENEATH, FAR FROM, CLOSE TO…

…and have discussions about how similar some of these concepts are (like how under, beneath, and below are very much alike) or how beside, close to, and next to are pretty much interchangeable.

NOTE THAT the “see through” container allows you to work on under/below/inside, etc. - because an opaque container wouldn’t have quite the same effect- and if you’re like me, I forget what I made them put under there. 🤪

☝️If you work with groups, you can let your students give directions to each other (while you give feedback).

👉 You can also have students tell YOU where to place items! I like to get some wrong so they can explain WHY I WAS WRONG, which they take great pleasure in doing. 🤣
